Stage 4 Part 4

3D IZ SO COOL~!~**

3D tv's, Avatar, red and blue glasses? Lame. My work on Stage 4 Part 4 references the recent explosion and demand for 3D technologies. Will 3D TV's really make the biggest looser a better show? Will it save the plot lines from dieing sitcoms? Will it stop people from ripping shows online? Probably not, at least not for a little while. 3D computer displays? Probably not so far off. I took this video and made it 3D, if only you could find a pair of those old 3D glasses to make the dancing ghosts pop from the screen as you fall into Shakiras syrupy trance with the chopped and screwed version of her hit song She Wolf. I cant wait for pro-sumer 3D cameras in the next 5-8 years, I cant wait for the fun that creates with iMovie 3D and Final Cut Pro HD 3D. All speculations, but soon? I hope!

Phase 4 Part 3
This week we were given a political video exploring past and present Canadian politics. The video shows lovable Piere Trudeau, celebratory riots after Canada won olympic gold juxtaposed with audio from native protests. I wanted to bring one of my favorite political moments to this video. A moment refereed too as the Shawinigan Handshake, where Chretien grabbed the neck of a protester, coking him, and pushing him out of his path. I find this moment speaks volume of Canadian politics and policy, the importance we place on our leaders and what the public thinks of our government. This clip bleeds through the keyed out red that covers the celebration of a raucous crowd repeating over and over alowing us to see only glimpses of the action. The audio is from a video I made several months ago as part of a YouTube fetish project called SelawnBrunch that was a dialogue with the online fetish community through performative video. This let me include myself in the political arena, something many young people do not do. Do I feel stifled? Do I fear for my safety? Do I even care...

Stage 2

We received "good idea/bad idea", an old cartoon to work with. We removed the song that was attached and the cartoons that were the good ideas and the bad ideas. Our concept was to replace these cartoons with our own good and bad ideas. My first juxtaposition used videos from YouTube user FYADprincess where he "does ownage to a baby". This user playfully "trolls" YouTube viewers by showing classic gross out picture "Goatsee" to a small child on a cell phone, he also "does ownage" by putting a lemon in a baby's mouth and filming its reaction. This ironic use of the YouTube dialogue parodying Fail videos and Ownage videos causes many viewers to leave angry comments about the destructive nature of these actions. This is the goal of the troll.
My second juxtaposition deals with the classic YouTube video "goat yelling like a man" this is paired up with the song papers by Usher where he yells like a goat, yelling like a man. This similarity of this audio provides a humorous contrast between funny and serious works presented in the online context.

FBF

'FBF' is a collection of images pulled from our friends and friends of our friends on Facebook. This collection of portraits acts as a self portrait, a reflection of who we choose to relate to in the online and IRL world. This work specifically references a recent trend involving nostalgia, fine art and contemporary juxtaposition. Collage is hip, its in and it might be here for a few more months. Grab an old issue of life magazine, cut the face out, put some diamonds behind it and you have an art. When done well, beautiful new images are made, when done poorly, well... 'FBF' plays with this recently revived trend but instead of referencing things of the past, we reference our hyper-contemporary surroundings. The music acts as the only tie of nostalgia, allowing us to remember the "GoOd TyMeZ~*~" from last night as a little tear wells up in our eye.

A more extreme version of the 'Art Porn' site I handed in for class

Defiantly NSFW (unless you work for a porn company)

Girls In Front Of Art
I find it troublesome that there is so much anti-techism in the class. It seems odd that people who find technology troublesome and think that it is taking over our lives take a class where the Internet and technology is the focus. Perhaps they are trying to beat the beast from within, get in and burst your way out using html etc. Also I think it might be a cop out since it is so much easier to talk about the negative and sensational sides of technology rather then focus on the good that it is doing for us. My Nana can go to the opera and sit in the balcony because of the escalator and elevator; she is too old to take the stairs. Thank you technology.

Meme and War of the Worlds

A meme, simplified, is a unit of social information, if the piece of information is good or useful it is passed on, it stands the test of time, if the piece of information is bad or irrelevant, it is thrown to the wayside. A modern re-appropriation of the term meme is a piece of online information (often an image macro or a video) that is passed from one user to another while constantly having elements changed but still retains its core idea. The War of the Worlds falls somewhere between these two definitions. Within the broadcast ideas were passed along and rash decisions were made to flee the city. In retrospect this leans towards the modern definition of meme, mainly because it is funny (to just me?) that thousands of people believed that aliens were attacking a city. It also falls within the modern definition of trolling, working someone up over the internet (through a technological barrier) and often causing them to act out. The original definition of meme is also met because vital information that seemed to be life or death was being passed on at an alarming rate to a huge amount of people that was so convincing that many acted on it.

So in conclusion Orson Wells is the greatest troll of all time.
