Phase 4 Part 3
This week we were given a political video exploring past and present Canadian politics. The video shows lovable Piere Trudeau, celebratory riots after Canada won olympic gold juxtaposed with audio from native protests. I wanted to bring one of my favorite political moments to this video. A moment refereed too as the Shawinigan Handshake, where Chretien grabbed the neck of a protester, coking him, and pushing him out of his path. I find this moment speaks volume of Canadian politics and policy, the importance we place on our leaders and what the public thinks of our government. This clip bleeds through the keyed out red that covers the celebration of a raucous crowd repeating over and over alowing us to see only glimpses of the action. The audio is from a video I made several months ago as part of a YouTube fetish project called SelawnBrunch that was a dialogue with the online fetish community through performative video. This let me include myself in the political arena, something many young people do not do. Do I feel stifled? Do I fear for my safety? Do I even care...
